What are dental implants?
A dental implant is a replacement tooth made out of titanium that is surgically placed into the jawbone under your gum, providing support for a crown or bridge. A dental implant is the most effective and durable way of replacing missing teeth without the need for surgery.
What are dental implants used in?
Dental implants are used to replace teeth which have been lost due to injury, disease or accidents. They can be used in a number of situations:
Missing teeth – In this situation a person has lost two or more teeth and would like to replace them with dental implants. Dental implants can be placed into your jawbone replacing the teeth that have been lost. We will discuss this further in the next section.
Not enough bone – If a person needs more bone but feels they don’t have enough bone to support implants, dental implants can be used. Dental implants are used to provide extra support for a bridge or crown. You can read about this further in the next section.
Teeth that are crowded or crooked – Dental implants are often used for this situation as well. The reason for this is to replace a tooth that has been crowded or rotated. Dental implants can be placed in the jaw using your gum or bone. We will discuss this further in the next section.
How does dental implants work?
Dental implants restore teeth by using titanium screws to hold them into place. Your natural bone will not grow over them (just like your jawbone doesn’t grow over your teeth). This is because there is no nerve or blood supply with the implant, so they won’t die off. The tooth roots are connected by a titanium rod and if the implants are placed where they can serve as your teeth, they will form a complete skeleton (remaining bone will form around them). The root canal is the same as that of natural teeth.
Dental implants provide your teeth with their natural look and strength, but are also resistant to wear caused by hot and cold temperatures, stress and normal chewing. In addition to helping you chew food again, dental implants also increase your self-confidence.
